NEW DELHI: The United States space body Nasa on Monday said that seven crew members of Expedition 71 and two astronauts, including Indian-origin Sunita Williams have started spacewalk preparations and an array of advanced microgravity research.
Nasa said the nine residents aboard the International Space Station (ISS) also maintained electronic, life support, and orbital plumbing systems.
The US space agency has scheduled two spacewalks for June 24 and July 2.
The first spacewalk will see two spacewalkers remove faulty radio hardware and swab station surfaces for microorganisms. The tasks planned for the second spacewalk include removing and replacing a gyroscope assembly, relocating an antenna, and preparing the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer for future upgrades, said Nasa.
The space agency said Starliner Pilot Sunita Williams began her day by transferring wastewater between station modules. She then replaced a video camera in the Columbus laboratory module. Later, she headed over to the Kibo lab where she watered the Advanced Plant Habitat in preparation for upcoming scientific experiments.
Starliner Commander Butch Wilmore was busy in the Harmony module’s maintenance work area. He was setting up hardware and researching liquid flows. The Gaucho Lung study aims to enhance drug delivery for respiratory conditions, treat infants with respiratory distress syndrome, and prevent tube contamination with intermittent liquid flows, the space agency said.
Sunita Williams became the first woman to pilot a test spacecraft on its maiden flight to space. The 58-year-old has earlier spent 322 days in space, and held a record for maximum hours of spacewalk by a woman. This is her third space flight, others being in 2006 and 2012.
