NEW DELHI: New Zealand secured a historic Test victory in India, their first since 1988, by successfully chasing a challenging target in difficult conditions on the final day of the first Test in Bengaluru on Sunday.
The win marked only their third triumph on Indian soil in nearly seven decades.

India were bowled out for a meager 46 in the first innings, their lowest total at home, to which New Zealand responded with a commanding 402.

Despite India’s improved performance in the second innings, scoring 462, New Zealand’s bowlers set the stage for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Following the defeat, India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant took to social media to share his thoughts.

“This game will Test your limits, knock you down, lift you up and throw you back again. But those who love it rise stronger every time. Thanks to the amazing Bengaluru crowd for the love, support and cheers. We will be back stronger,” Pant wrote.

Will Young (48 not out) and Rachin Ravindra (39 not out) displayed composure amidst the pressure, steering New Zealand to the required 107 runs after losing two early wickets.

The victory was particularly impressive given the absence of their injured batting stalwart, Kane Williamson, and underscored the team’s resilience.
New Zealand joined England and Australia as the only teams to defeat India at home since 2013.
