NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jayant Sinha on Wednesday responded to the show-cause notice issued to him for skipping campaigning.
The BJP had issued a show-cause notice to Jayant Sinha for his conspicuous absence in campaigning following the declaration of Manish Jaiswal as the candidate from the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat. The notice alleged that Sinha’s inaction had tarnished the party’s image.
Addressing the BJP’s Jharkhand general secretary, Aditya Sahu, in a 2-page letter, Sinha said that he was surprised as he had already shared his plans with party President JP Nadda about stepping away from election duties along with a public post via X (formerly Twitter) to focus on climate issues.

“Firstly, I would like to remind you of my discussions with our Party President, Shri JP Nadda ji. On 2nd March 2024, well ahead of the elections, I communicated my decision to step back from electoral responsibilities to focus on combating issues arising from global climate change. This decision was publicly announced via a tweet for clarity and transparency,” said Jayant Sinha in the letter.
Sinha added that he had withdrawn from the elections on March 2 after approval from Nadda but was “happy to support the party on economic and governance policies.”
The incumbent Hazaribagh MP also said that he had publicly endorsed the new running candidate Manish Jaiswal.
Then, Sinha directly addressed the accusations of not participating in campaign activities saying, “If the party had wanted me to participate in any election activities, you could surely have contacted me. However, not a single senior party official or MP/MLA from Jharkhand reached out to me post my announcement on 2nd March 2024. I was not invited for any party events, rallies, or organizational meetings. If Shri Babu Lal Marandi ji wanted me to participate, he could have certainly called me, but he did not.”
Jayant Sinha also clarified that he was only invited by Manish Jaiswal to his nomination rally scheduled for May 1 but could not attend due to the late notice. Thus, he went to Jaiswal’s residence the day after the rally on May 2 and conveyed his regards to his family as he was not present at the time.
“After informing the Hon’ble Speaker, I left India on 10th May 2024 to attend to some pressing personal commitments overseas. The party had not asked me to participate in any events, so I saw no reason to stay,” wrote Sinha clarifying the accusations about his absence in the election season.
Sinha also rebuked the allegation that he did not vote stating he had done so via postal ballot before leaving India.
The former union minister also criticized Sahu for making this a public issue rather than discussing the matter privately.
“Given my contributions to the party and the circumstances detailed above, the public issuance of your letter is unseemly. Your approach demoralizes dedicated party workers and undermines the party’s collective efforts. Additionally, despite my loyalty and hard work for the party, it appears that I am being unjustly targeted. We could have certainly spoken in-person or on the phone at any time to address any of your misgivings. As the party official responsible for the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha elections, you could have reached me at any time. To send me a letter after the elections are over is incomprehensible,” said Jayant Sinha ending the letter.
