‘Was eating her own hair’: Surgeons remove 2kg hairball from girl’s stomach after 16 years | Bareilly News – Times of India

BAREILLY: A case has emerged at the district hospital that has left the doctors astonished. A young woman, aged 21, had a mass of hair weighing not just a little, but a full two kilograms removed from her stomach after surgery.
On Friday, when the girl was discharged from the hospital, the doctors shared this information. Currently, the girl is reported to be completely healthy and taking rest at home.
The 21-year-old woman from Kargaina, Subhashnagar, had been experiencing stomach pain for about five years.Despite consulting several private doctors, the cause of her ailment remained unknown. Finally, her family took her to the district hospital, where a CT scan revealed a mass resembling hair in her stomach.
She was admitted to the district hospital on September 22, and about a week ago, a surgery was performed to remove nearly two kilograms of hair from her stomach.
Psychiatrist Dr. Ashish Kumar explained that the girl underwent counselling after the operation. When her family was questioned, they had no idea how such a large amount of hair ended up in her stomach.
Upon speaking with the girl, it was discovered that she had been secretly eating her own hair for the past 16 years. To prevent her from repeating this behaviour in the future, counselling sessions will continue for a few months.
According to the doctors, the girl suffered from a hair-eating disorder, which had caused so much hair to accumulate in her stomach that she was unable to eat food. A CT scan of her stomach revealed the presence of a trichobezoar, a condition associated with the mental disorder trichotillomania.
The successful operation was carried out by senior surgeon Dr M P Singh, Dr Anjali Soni, Dr Mugdha Sharma, staff nurse Bhavna, along with psychiatrist Dr Ashish Kumar and Dr Pragya Maheshwari at the district hospital.
