Russia has rejected the idea of engaging in nuclear discussions with the United States, according to Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, on Wednesday. Zakharova attributed this decision to the United States‘ position on Nato‘s expansion.
“We see no point in dialogue with Washington without respect for Russia’s fundamental interests.First of all, this is the problem of Nato’s expansion into the post-soviet space, which poses threats to common security,” Zakharova said.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, announced on Tuesday that Russia will not consider negotiating a new agreement with the United States to replace the current treaty limiting each nation’s strategic nuclear weapons, which is set to expire in 2026.
Peskov emphasised that the agreement needs to be expanded and include other countries.
