Following her role in Silsila (1981) with Amitabh and Rekha, she stepped back to focus on her personal life. Despite her popularity, speculations about her hiatus persisted over the years.
Senior Bachchan addressed the rumors surrounding Jaya Bachchan’s break from acting during a 1990s press interaction.In a video shared by Lehren on YouTube, a journalist inquired whether Jaya had stepped away from films to prevent a situation similar to the one depicted in Abhimaan from affecting their home life.

Amitabh clarified that Jaya’s break from acting was her own decision. He explained that she chose to step away from films to focus on family, feeling her presence was more needed at home. He added that she is free to return to acting if she wishes in the future.

Big B shared that, while the actress was a major star when they met and married, he wanted to establish his own career and standing before their marriage. This personal goal motivated him, as he believed achieving success would enable him to marry Jaya.

Jaya Bachchan made her comeback in 1998 with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa and appeared in several films thereafter, including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho. Her most recent release was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023.
