NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday asked Mumbai College not to enforce hijab ban till November 18.
“Will you ban girls wearing bindi or tilak,” the bench asked, while staying the circular banning wearing of hijab, no cap, or badge will be permitted. “There will be stay of the Circular to the extent that it directs no hijab, cap or badge shall be worn”, the court said.
College argued that if Muslim female students are allowed to wear hijab, it wouldn’t be able to stop Hindu students from wearing saffron shawls to college as political elements would fan a controversy. The top court said its interim order on ‘burqa, hijab’ should not be misused and granted liberty to Mumbai college to approach court in case of misuse.
