'Women's participation in politics very important': AAP MP Swati Maliwal after casting vote in Delhi | India News - Times of India

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal called on citizens, especially women, to vote as polling commenced for all seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital. Maliwal highlighted the importance of women’s participation in politics after casting her vote in Delhi.
“It is a very big day for the democracy. I want to appeal to everyone, especially women to come out and cast their votes.In India, women’s participation in politics is very important,” Maliwal said.
Maliwal, the former chief of the Delhi commission of women, has been in the spotlight following allegations against Arvind Kejriwal’s former personal secretary, Bibhav Kumar. She accused Kumar of assaulting her at the Delhi chief minister’s residence on May 13. Maliwal filed a complaint with the Delhi police on May 14. The next day, Kumar filed a counter-complaint, accusing Maliwal of unauthorized entry and verbal abuse.
A Special Investigation Team was formed to investigate Maliwal’s complaint, leading to Kumar’s arrest on May 19. He is currently in police custody.
The sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections began on Saturday morning across 58 parliamentary constituencies in six states and two Union Territories. This phase includes seats in Bihar, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Delhi, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, with a total of 889 candidates.
In Delhi, the contest involves AAP and Congress, part of the INDIA bloc, against the BJP, which won all seven seats in the last two elections. Congress is contesting three seats, while AAP is contesting four.
Polling for 428 parliamentary constituencies in 25 states and Union Territories has already been completed in the first five phases. Over 11.13 crore voters, including 5.84 crore males, 5.29 crore females, and 5,120 third gender electors, are eligible to vote in the sixth phase. Approximately 11.4 lakh polling officials are involved in conducting this phase of the election.
