Yashasvi Jaiswal continues record-breaking spree, joins Gundappa Vishwanath and Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has once again etched his name into the record books, continuing his incredible run of form in Test cricket.
The 22-year-old left-hander, who made his India debut in July 2023, reached yet another milestone on Saturday by becoming only the third Indian cricketer to score over 1000 runs in home Tests in a single calendar year. He joins Indian legends Gundappa Vishwanath (1047) and Sunil Gavaskar (1013), both of whom accomplished the feat in 1979.
Scorecard: India vs New Zealand, 2nd Test
This achievement comes just a day after Jaiswal became the first Indian to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year before turning 23. His stellar performances have seen him accumulate more than 1300 runs in his short Test career, at an impressive average of nearly 60, which includes three centuries and eight fifties.
1000+ runs in home Tests in a calendar year

  • 1047 – Gundappa Vishwanath (1979)
  • 1013 – Sunil Gavaskar (1979)
  • 1058 – Graham Gooch (1990)
  • 1012 – Justin Langer (2004)
  • 1126 – Mohd Yousuf (2006)
  • 1407 – Michael Clarke (2012)
  • 1000*- Yashasvi Jaiswal (2024)

During the second innings of the second Test against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune, Jaiswal further cemented his place in cricket history by becoming the first Indian and only the second batter to hit more than 30 sixes in Test cricket in a calendar year. He joins New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, who achieved the same milestone in 2014.

In the ongoing Test match, Jaiswal led India’s chase of a formidable 359-run target with a gutsy half-century. He scored 77, off 65 balls, and also formed a crucial 62-run partnership with Shubman Gill (23) for the second wicket, keeping India in the hunt for a remarkable victory.
With records tumbling like a pack of cards, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant form is rapidly establishing him as one of India’s most exciting young talents in Test cricket.
