VARANASI: At least 12 pilgrims from Jharkhand and West Bengal were injured when their bus rammed into a stationary truck on the national highway in Jhansi village of UP’s Chandauli district on Sunday morning. The pilgrims were heading to the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand.
Chandauli SP Anil Kumar said the injured pilgrims were admitted to the district hospital. The condition of three injured pilgrims — Sintu Pundesar of Bardhman, Ujjwal Goswami of Jamtara and Uttam Golmara of Dhanbad — was serious and they were referred to Varanasi.
A group of 30 pilgrims from Jamtara district in Jharkhand and Bardhaman in West Bengal had booked the bus for Kedarnath pilgrimage.
The pilgrims had stopped in Gaya for dinner break on Saturday night and then proceeded with the journey. Survivors told the police they were asleep when the accident occurred in the wee hours. A police patrol team reached the site and took the injured passengers to the district hospital.
Police suspect the bus driver fell asleep and lost control over the vehicle, leading to the accident.
