  • London’s Metropolitan Police announced on Wednesday that they are investigating new sexual assault claims against the late Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, with 90 victims identified so far.
  • The investigation follows a BBC documentary aired in September that detailed accusations of rape and sexual assault against the former owner of Harrods. Over 400 women and witnesses have come forward alleging sexual misconduct by the billionaire since the documentary’s release, according to the police.
The police said that “numerous victims, some reporting multiple offences,” had come forward following a renewed public appeal. A specialized police unit will review all reports and investigate all leads, they added.
Officers are also investigating individuals connected to Al-Fayed to determine their roles in any potential offenses. Additionally, they are reviewing past investigations for missed opportunities. Over 50,000 pages of evidence, including victim statements, have been examined.
“This investigation is about giving survivors a voice, despite the fact that Mohamed Al-Fayed is no longer alive to face prosecution,” said Commander Stephen Clayman of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.
“However, we are now pursuing any individuals suspected of being complicit in his offending, and we are committed to seeking justice.”
Clayman also acknowledged that “past events may have impacted the public’s trust and confidence in our approach” but stressed that the police are “determined to rebuild that trust by addressing these allegations with integrity and thoroughness.”
Earlier, the police had confirmed identifying 60 potential victims.
The police force has referred itself to the UK police watchdog following complaints about its handling of prior investigations into Al-Fayed’s alleged sexual abuse. Accusations have also been made against Al-Fayed’s late brothers, Salah and Ali.
Mohamed Al-Fayed died in August 2023 at the age of 94.
