Embracing AI at an unprecedented level, the world’s largest democracy is poised to transform itself and the world. NVIDIA, the world’s foremost chip company, solidified partnerships with two colossal Indian conglomerates – Reliance Industries and Tata Group – on 8th September, marking a momentous stride, not just in the realm of AI in India infrastructure, but also in the domain of retraining and upskilling a substantial portion of the nation’s tech workforce.
Reliance and NVIDIA partner to advance AI in India: In its collaboration with Reliance Industries, NVIDIA announced its intention to establish India’s very own foundational Large Language Model (LLM), trained to comprehend diverse Indian languages. Jio Platforms, in a statement, elaborated that this new AI infrastructure would “empower researchers, innovators, startups, scientists, AI practitioners, and other professionals across India to delve into accelerated computing and high-speed, secure networked computing for efficient and energetically optimized workloads.”
As part of this alliance, NVIDIA will furnish Jio with comprehensive AI supercomputer technologies, encompassing CPU, GPU, networking solutions, and AI operating systems, facilitating the construction of AI models. Jio, in turn, will undertake the management and maintenance of this AI infrastructure.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, asserted, “As India transitions from a data-centric nation to a hub for technological innovation and rapid growth, super computing and technology hubs like the one we envision with NVIDIA will play a catalytic role, much akin to the transformative impact Jio had on AI in India journey.”
In conjunction with the Tata Group, NVIDIA has devised a multifaceted blueprint, encompassing the deployment of generative AI processes and the upskilling of over six hundred thousand employees of India’s largest IT services company, TCS, in the domain of AI. The partnership will also entail collaborating with Tata Motors to infuse AI into design, styling, engineering, simulation testing, and autonomous vehicle capabilities, alongside aiding Tata Dispatches in establishing AI infrastructure.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Jio Infocomm, affirmed that these two corporations will develop an advanced AI in India framework that is “secure, sustainable, and profoundly applicable to India’s distinctive requirements.” He went on to express, “This cutting-edge platform will act as a catalyst for expediting AI-driven innovations across various sectors, ranging from healthcare and education to enterprise solutions. Our vision is to make AI accessible to researchers, startups, and enterprises throughout the nation, thus accelerating AI in India journey toward becoming a leader in AI.”
Chandrasekharan, Chairman of Tata Sons, highlighted that the prominence of AI in India has elevated it to a central priority within governments, industries, and society at large. He stated, “Our collaboration with NVIDIA will democratize access to AI infrastructure, expedite the deployment of AI-driven solutions, and facilitate the scaling up of AI capabilities. The extensive reach of Tata Group across diverse sectors, combined with NVIDIA’s profound expertise, offers myriad opportunities for advancing India’s AI ambitions.”
Donning his signature black biker jacket, NVIDIA’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, addressed the press in Bengaluru, elucidating the mission to establish supercomputers. He expounded, “In Reliance’s case, they aim to leverage it for generating AI services that cater to their vast user base of 450 million individuals. For Tata, the objective is to create infrastructure.”
The infrastructure Tata is embarking upon is designed to support burgeoning AI in India that seek robust foundations. Huang emphasized, “These companies are clamoring for power, seeking access to infrastructure. They often resort to global ventures in pursuit of infrastructure, even relocating their talent to California. There’s no need for that. We should build the infrastructure here, enabling the talent to stay.”
This development coincided with NVIDIA’s CEO meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which they deliberated on the promising prospects of AI. Huang elaborated on the discussions, highlighting three key aspects: accelerating AI infrastructure development in India, the imperative of upskilling and reskilling every individual to become an AI expert in the future (including NVIDIA’s own talent pool), and NVIDIA’s willingness to partner with Indian companies to bolster the nation’s IT workforce, potentially establishing the world’s largest AI workforce.
Huang praised India’s abundant resources, saying, “You have your own data, a multitude of languages, and unique population needs that diverge from the rest of the world. You possess a distinct demand and a prolific reserve of computer scientists. India produces world-class computer scientists on a substantial scale.”
The vision is to create a novel infrastructure that transforms data into intelligence, with Huang stressing that there’s no necessity for India to outsource this task. He asserted, “We should create it here. Train here. Produce AI here. You have all the prerequisites. All the ingredients to create and utilize AI in India. This is the era of intelligence.”
Huang underscored the role of AI in India in bridging the technological divide. He explained, “India has made significant investments in establishing 5G infrastructure, and with ubiquitous access to mobile devices, the future holds the promise of AI. Whatever an urban dweller or a farmer desires to accomplish, they can simply ask their mobile device, and it will execute the task. We are closing the technology gap, and Prime Minister Modi is pleased to hear that.”
NVIDIA currently maintains four development centers in India, located in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bengaluru, employing over 3,800 professionals in the country, with a majority situated in India’s Silicon Valley. Huang disclosed the company’s intent to double or even triple its workforce in the future, although he refrained from specifying a timeline. Huang also advocated for AI in India, underlining that the nation possesses unique requirements and valuable data that should be harnessed for domestic purposes, including considerations of national security.
