NEW DELHI: Delhi minister Atishi has been admitted to LNJP Hospital after her health condition deteriorated while on an indefinite hunger strike against the Haryana government for not releasing 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Delhi, causing a water crisis in the national capital. Her blood sugar levels dropped to critically low levels, prompting immediate medical attention.
Atishi’s hunger strike entered its fifth day on Tuesday. She embarked on the strike to demand Haryana release Delhi’s share of water.
A health checkup revealed her blood sugar levels had fallen drastically, with her blood sugar levels dropping as low as 43, according to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh.
“Her blood sugar levels dropped to as low as 43. The doctors suggested she be admitted to the hospital before her condition worsens… She is being admitted to LNJP Hospital. She has not eaten anything for the last 5 days. Her sugar levels have dropped, ketone is increasing, and BP is decreasing… She is not fighting for herself, she was fighting for the people of Delhi, for water,” he told ANI.
AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj provided further details on Atishi’s condition. “Atishi’s blood sugar level fell to 36, so she has been admitted to LNJP Hospital,” Bharadwaj posted on X.
In conversation with ANI, Bharadwaj added, “Her blood sugar levels had been dropping from the night. When we submitted her blood sample, her sugar levels came out to be 46. When we checked her sugar levels from a portable machine, her sugar levels came out to be 36… Doctors are checking her vitals and only after that will they give suggestions.”
The issue has also been noted in an AAP press release, citing that both Atishi’s blood pressure and sugar levels had dropped significantly due to the hunger strike. The rapid decline in her health metrics was labeled dangerous by doctors, adding urgency to her hospitalization.
Water Minister Atishi maintained her stance despite her health conditions, insisting that her hunger strike would continue until the Haryana government fulfills Delhi’s water rights, specifically pointing to the opening of the gates of Hathnikund Barrage. “The gates of Hathnikund Barrage are not opened.”
The AAP has raised accusations against the Haryana government, alleging that it is supplying 100 million gallons per day less water to Delhi, adversely impacting the lives of 28 lakh people in the capital.
