CAT 2024: Exam pattern & marking scheme
The CAT 2024 examination will be divided into three main sections:
- Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension: This section includes para-jumbles, sentence completion, reading comprehension, and more.
- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning: This section will cover data tables, bar graphs, pie charts, logical reasoning puzzles, and more.
- Quantitative Aptitude: Topics in this section include algebra, arithmetic, geometry, coding-decoding, and more.
The examination will consist of both multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs, lasting a total of 120 minutes. Candidates will need to answer 66 questions across the three sections, with a time limit of 40 minutes for each section.
For each correct answer, candidates will receive three marks, while one mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. However, there is no negative marking for non-MCQ questions.
The exam will be conducted in three slots. Slot details will be available on the CAT 2024 admit cards, which will be released on November 5, 2024.

Understand the exam format: Familiarise yourself with the CAT exam pattern, syllabus, and marking scheme. Take a diagnostic test to identify your strengths and weaknesses, helping you create a targeted study plan.
Master the core concepts: Focus on mastering core concepts and solving basic problems across all sections. Develop a balanced study schedule that allocates time for each section and includes regular practice with various question types.
Take mock tests: Transition from learning to application by taking full-length mock tests under timed conditions. Analyse your performance to identify recurring issues and refine your study plan accordingly.
The importance of revision: Prioritise revising key formulas and concepts in the final stages of preparation. Engage in short, focused mock tests to fine-tune your skills and maintain your mental and physical well-being.
Last week’s prep: In the week leading up to the exam, consolidate your learning and finalise your test-taking strategy. Organise all necessary documents, verify your admit card details, and ensure you are well-rested and mentally prepared for exam day.
