NEW DELHI: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday lauded the performance of the opposition’s INDIA bloc in the Lok Sabha elections, stating that the alliance partners “fought well, unitedly and resolutely”.
The INDIA bloc meeting, held at Kharge’s residence, was attended by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, M.K. Stalin, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee, and Sanjay Raut.AAP’s Raghav Chadha and Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, were also present at the gathering.
“The mandate is decisively against Mr. Modi, against him and the substance and style of his politics. It is a huge political loss for him personally apart from being a clear moral defeat as well,” Kharge said.
He further added, “However, he is determined to subvert the will of the people.”
The election results showed that the BJP secured 240 seats, a significant decrease from their 2019 tally of 303. In contrast, the Congress made a strong comeback, winning 99 seats. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won 292 seats, while the INDIA bloc surpassed the 230 mark, presenting a formidable challenge and defying exit poll predictions.
Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a third term, the BJP is relying on the support from other parties in his coalition, particularly JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu.
