PUNE: A Pune court on Monday extended the police custody of the parents of a 17-year-old boy involved in a fatal Porsche car accident until June 14. The extension also includes another accused in the case related to destruction of evidence.
The young boy’s father, Vishal Agrawal, a realtor, and his mother, Shivani, were arrested due to their suspected role in the swapping of blood samples of the teenager. The juvenile was allegedly drunk during the crash on May 19 in Kalyani Nagar, which resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals.
Shivani Agrawal was detained on June 1 after it was found that her blood samples had been used in place of her son’s. Vishal Agrawal was also arrested for his alleged involvement in destroying evidence.
In addition to the Agrawal couple, Ashpak Makandar, who acted as a middleman between them and the doctors at the state-run Sassoon Hospital where the blood samples were collected, was presented in court on Monday.
The prosecution requested an extension of the trio’s custody to investigate where the juvenile’s blood samples were disposed of. They revealed that Makandar had been paid Rs 4 lakh by the boy’s father’s driver.
Of this amount, Rs 3 lakh was allegedly given to Sassoon doctors for replacing the blood samples.
“Rs 3 lakh has been recovered from Dr. Srihari Halnor and Sassoon Hospital employee Atul Ghatkamble, and we need to recover the remaining Rs 1 lakh,” stated the investigating officer.
Defence lawyer Prashant Patil opposed the extension of the teen’s parents’ custody, arguing that they had already spent several days in police remand and further custodial interrogation was unnecessary.
The minor has been sent to an observation home.
