“Before the pandemic, I was quite busy, but once COVID hit, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands,” Kangana said on the show. “When the lockdown began, I turned to Twitter, but as soon as it ended, my account was banned. I couldn’t even survive for six months. I faced an overwhelming number of cases, with at least 200 FIRs filed against me daily,” she said.
Eventually, they banned me themselves, and I thought, ‘Well, that’s a relief,’” the actress added.
Coming to the present times, Kangana Ranaut is looking forward to making a significant impact with her upcoming film, ‘Emergency.’ This film, which Ranaut both stars in and directs, delves into the historical Emergency period in India during the mid-1980s. Ranaut takes on the formidable role of Indira Gandhi, a central figure in this era of political upheaval.
In a conversation with India Today, Ranaut drew parallels between ‘Emergency’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, noting that both films present complex narratives where audiences may struggle to decide who to root for. “I don’t know why people are so uncomfortable with the truth. As if it does not stand there glaring at us evidently, and so obviously. To me, Ms. Gandhi is what she is and we cannot compartmentalize people as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. If you look from that perspective this film will open many doors for you but at the same time, a close comparison to draw with my film is maybe Oppenheimer,” she mentioned.
Further, Kangana Ranaut, who first announced ‘Emergency’ in 2021, has clarified that while the film is a political drama, it is not a biopic of Indira Gandhi. Alongside her, the film features an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade, who will portray Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The late actor Satish Kaushik will also be seen in a role as Former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram. It is scheduled to release on September 6, 2024.
